Why are U.S. Ties with stripes different?

My husband and I currently enjoy the TV series "Mad Men," plays the beginning of 1960. I notice that the stripes point to the ties of the gentlemen from top left to bottom right. Today you only see the stripes from lower left to upper right. When the trend has changed? Jennifer H., via e-mail
